Student majoring in biological chemistry should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the molecular structures of both the monomeric biological building blocks and their corresponding assembled biopolymers and how the structures of these relate to their function.
- Demonstrate understanding of the chemical concepts of kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibria as applied to biological systems.
- Demonstrate understanding of the reaction mechanisms of biological catalysts, including the use of organic and metal cofactors.
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles that govern the use and processing of biological molecules, including regulation and integration of these processes.
- Obtain experience with the use of models (Michaelis-Menten for kinetics, Symmetry and sequential models for allosterism).
