Permeable Pavers

The parking lot at Admission and Student Financial Services is permeable, allowing rainwater to flow around the pavers and soak into the soil underneath rather than flow into a storm sewer.

The permeable pavers are separated by decorative gravel. Under the pavers, several layers of crushed stone — from small chips that help filter the water to larger ones that provide storage for water — overlay a subdrain and geotextile fabric.

Green roofs, bioswales, permeable pavers, cisterns, and reconstructed prairie are all conservation practices that can reduce and slow the flow of water into the stormwater system, helping us be better neighbors to people living downstream.

Bioswales — plant-lined depressions around some of our campus buildings — collect, direct, and absorb rainwater.

Harvested rainwater in cisterns around campus provides water used to flush toilets, irrigate fields, and water plants in the Noyce Science Center greenhouse.
