At Grinnell, students have the opportunity to learn about many different aspects of the ancient Greco-Roman world — language, literature, art, archaeology, history, philosophy, etc. The interdisciplinary nature of our subject is reflected in the holistic approach we take in all of our courses and our curriculum. A language class is not just grammar but also culture, and a culture course does not ignore text.
Students can take beginning Greek or Latin every fall, intermediate Greek or Latin every spring, and advanced courses on specific Greek or Latin authors, works, and genres every semester. In addition, from among a wider range of courses in English, students can study ancient philosophy and, with focus alternating between Greece and Rome, art, archaeology, and history every year.
Below is a list of our current offerings, with available descriptions. See how these courses can fit together in a program of study leading to a major in Classics, see the Academic Catalog.
