The Weingart ’61 Pavilion is a space dedicated to campus and community connection, collaboration, and exchange. To both honor the original intent of this space and to manage the demand for using this space, the following framework will guide the reservation and booking of the Weingart ’61 Pavilion:
Priority is given to events that foster connection and welcome participation (and/or observation) by students and/or faculty and staff, and members of the community at large. This would include uses such as open meetings, open social gatherings, dialogues, talks, and workshops.
With a secondary goal to serve as a teaching, learning, and meeting space, community members and Grinnell College students, faculty, and staff may reserve the space for business meetings, educational workshops or presentations, and other similar events without the primary intent to foster connection between students and members of the community at large.
Realizing the location of this space will be appealing to many, during non-academic terms, the pavilion may be reserved for private use for a fee. Personal events such as a private reception or related gathering would fall into this category.
Events may not create any hazard or impose undue hardship for Renfrow Hall residents or surrounding neighbors. Grinnell College reserves the right to decline an event proposal if it is not consistent with the Weingart Pavilion’s mission and purpose. Prohibited uses include partisan political events such as candidate campaign rallies and fund-raisers. However, the Weingart ’61 Pavilion may be used for debates, educational/informational forums, panels, discussions, or roundtables which may include candidates for elective office, or appearances by candidates for elective office in a non-partisan presentation, consistent with the educational mission of Grinnell College. All announced candidates for public office may give talks at other locations on campus following Grinnell's Rules for Political Activity on Campus.
The Weingart ‘61 Pavilion is designed with abundant natural light and an indoor garden as a year-round complement to Grinnell’s Central Park.
To further foster community connections, Grinnell College encourages the use of local restaurants for events hosted in the Weingart ’61 Pavilion. The Grinnell Chamber of Commerce maintains a complete listing of area dining options for your convenience. Users may also select Grinnell College Catering.
When construction is complete, the Weingart ’61 Pavilion will be open by reservation between 7am and 6:30pm, 7 days per week. Residents of Renfrow may access the pavilion until 10pm with their P-Card. When not being utilized for a reserved use, the pavilion is open for quiet uses on a drop-in basis. Technology and hospitality will not be available during drop-in hours.
As a shared campus and community space, the Katherine Howell Weingart ’61 Civic Innovation Pavilion maintains regular hours throughout the year.
Anchoring the southeast corner of Renfrow Hall at 1033 Broad Street just south of 6th Avenue, the Pavilion is easily accessible from the heart of downtown and the central campus. Visitors may utilize downtown street parking or Grinnell College visitor parking just to the north of 6th avenue. All parking options in town and on campus are free of charge.
The Grinnell College Local Shuttle operates Tuesday through Saturday 4–10 p.m. with stops on campus, and in town. The Grinnell College shuttle is free for all students, faculty, and staff with a College ID.
The Weingart ’61 Pavilion has a variety of accessibility features including an accessible entrance, restrooms, and hearing loop system. Additional accommodations can be arranged by request.
Grinnell College welcomes the participation of people with disabilities and assists with accommodations for persons with disabilities as guests of the College. If you need an accommodation to attend an event that is open to the public, contact either the department sponsoring the event or the Office of Safety and Security (641-269-4600), and they will assist you with the accommodation that you need. Examples of requests include:
For many of these accommodations, the College is utilizing the services of outside contractors and therefore requests must be submitted at least five business days prior to the event. Please submit any requests as soon as possible to ensure that they can be carried out as needed. If the request is not submitted in enough time to fulfill the request, you will be notified that the accommodation cannot be made. Event sponsors will be responsible for any additional costs associated with accommodations requiring the use of outside contractors.
The Weingart ’61 Pavilion is under construction and not presently available for use. We are hopeful to begin taking reservations later this semester, with a planned opening in early 2025. If you would like to be notified when reservations open, please contact Donnette Ellis, Grinnell College Community Relations Coordinator, 641-269-3900. Campus users will eventually have the ability to reserve the pavilion through 25Live.
Guests and users of the Weingart ’61 Pavilion should restore the space to its original set-up and should discard of any trash or leftover food at the conclusion of the event. Failure to do so will result in the following:
Failure to clean up and restore the space to order will result in a notification letter from Grinnell College Conference Operations & Events. Consequences of violations may range from a letter of warning, a mandatory meeting, or the charge of a fine based on the specific nature of the violation.
Harm to individual(s), or damaged, stolen or missing property will result in a referral to Campus Safety and/or local authorities. Failure to cooperate in cases of violation may lead to suspension of reservation privileges.
