A Rewarding Career

Shape our community. Collaborate with a forward-facing team. Become an admission counselor.

We’re not “gatekeepers.”

We are versatile, public-facing ambassadors. We recruit students, engage with families, host visitors, review applications, and make big decisions for the Grinnell College community. We serve on teams with enrollment operations, systems, financial aid, and marketing professionals. We serve alongside our senior directors and vice presidents. We’re not all Grinnell alumni, but we are all Grinnellians.

Develop as a Professional

Our work is student-centered and cyclical: We travel the world and meet students throughout the fall; we read their admission applications in the winter; we host them on campus in the spring; and we tackle new projects (and use most of our vacation days!) in the summer.

Our job requires many skills — some of which we develop, and others we already had — including data analysis, event planning, sales/recruiting, marketing, and interviewing.

Help Shape Your Community

We advocate for those who can succeed here, and we take great pride in the outcome: students from 50 states, 70 countries, and with all kinds of diverse experiences and worldviews.

Our job involves reviewing applicants’ academic and personal backgrounds and experiences to determine who should be offered admission. Grinnell students come from all over the world, and we know our community well.

Commit Yourself to the Common Good

Grinnell cares deeply about equity, support, and inclusion, and we are one of very few colleges nationwide that practices need-blind admission for domestic applicants and that meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans.

Consider this student employee's comments: “I learned quickly working at Grinnell what a well-working social justice machine looked like and how I can fit into that in the professional world.”

What do admission counselors do?

Take ownership of a region of the United States or the world by developing and executing a data-informed recruitment strategy and serving as the contact person for students and families in your territory. Visit high schools and attend college fairs in those areas. Meet and interview your students when they travel to Grinnell. Be one of the first readers for their application, and make your case for their admission decision.
