Traveling Abroad
The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff on programs around the world is of utmost importance. Grinnell College reserves the right to monitor and assess global risks and may not allow some countries to be selected as destinations. To ensure safety on the programs we send abroad, we provide multiple resources for the participants and all program leaders are led through an extensive emergency preparedness training.
Participants enroll in the U.S. Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program which allows travelers to receive travel alerts and warnings by enrolling the dates of travel with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in that country. For U.S. citizens, this also enables the Embassy to contact travelers in case of an emergency as well as help family or friends to get in touch.
Participants in IGE programs are also enrolled in AlertTraveler which utilizes the program itinerary dates and locations to provide travelers with country and city intelligence to help make informed decisions while traveling. Participants may enroll in the Alert Traveler Mobile App which provides safety and security alerts that could impact the safety of travelers, and instant check-in options that allow individuals to report back real-time statuses back to personnel at Grinnell College.
More information about global security can be found at U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories.
