Charles Bermingham

Charles (he/him) is a licensed counseling psychologist and health service provider and holds the positions of training director at SHAW and clinical associate professor in the counseling psychology PhD program at the University of Iowa. At SHAW he oversees a team of advanced level graduate students working towards their PhDs in counseling psychology. These students and Charles work closely in providing clinical and outreach services to Grinnell College.

Charles approaches therapy as a conversation where clients are the experts, and his role is to create an open, inviting, and non-judgmental atmosphere. In this setting he hopes clients feel free to explore whatever parts of themselves they wish as well as any current, past, and ongoing “issues”. He believes clients should be given the opportunity to explore their lives and patterns as they currently are and, after that exploration, make decisions regarding what, if any, areas they would like to change. He sees clients as strong individuals capable of achieving goals and making change in their lives as they see fit.

Charles spent his childhood and adolescent years in Rockford, Illinois and obtained a BA in Psychology from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. He received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa and completed an APA-accredited internship at U of I's University Counseling Service and has been with the SHAW team since 2016.

In his free time, Charles enjoys spending time with his partner, two dogs and friends, as well as mountain biking and working on cars. The best part of Grinnell College for Charles is the passion students have for social justice issues.
