Sarah Newell
Staff Nurse
Sarah Newell grew up in Newton, Iowa. Sarah attended Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During nursing school, Sarah found her passion and drive to help those with mental health concerns. Sarah moved to Toronto, Ontario after finishing college and there she worked at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. She worked on the women’s inpatient unit, working with female-identifying patients with severe mental illness most of whom had experienced trauma and also were struggling with issues of self-harm and addiction. Sarah and her family returned to Iowa in 2015 when she joined the team at Student Health and Wellness.
Sarah’s main role at SHAW is supporting student’s mental health and wellbeing through case management, which can include assisting students with referrals to off campus providers, arranging testing and addressing questions or concerns with insurance. Sarah also helps facilitate the telepsychiatry service.
In her free time, Sarah likes to spend time with her family and friends; attending her children’s events, going to movies, spending time outdoors and finding new recipes and working on her skills in the kitchen.
The best part of Grinnell College for Sarah is how passionate, dedicated and driven everyone is. “I love getting to know the students; who they are, where they are from and what they care about.”
