What I love about my job: I really enjoy welcoming prospective students and their families to campus. It is so interesting to hear where visitors are from and what they are passionate about.
What I love about Grinnell: Grinnell is such a welcoming community! I love running errands or attending an event downtown and bumping into people I know. I truly know my neighbors by name and we check in on each other and keep up on each other's lives. My extended family visits regularly and they like to joke that "everything in Grinnell is five minutes away." They're not exaggerating by much! But I also appreciate that I don't need to leave town to get anything I need. Grinnell has all the "essentials" as well as offers some amazing events (sports, music, theater, lectures, and speakers) that you would expect to find in a college town.
Hobbies/activities: I have five kids, so I feel like a lot of my time is spent attending events or shuttling kids to practices and rehearsals. But when I'm not busy running our house, you can usually find me out and about in town. I love attending sporting events, especially at the high school and college level. I also love to read and sew. I'm a big people-person, so I don't always care what I'm doing, as long as it's with someone, and usually the more, the merrier!
Advice about searching for schools: Ask questions and trust your gut. There's a lot you can't know about your future, and I believe changing your mind (and your major!) many different times is a really healthy thing to do when you're in college! Most of us don't know what we want to be for the rest of our life when we're 18. Or we think we know, but then we change our mind. You can't know what you don't know, so don't be afraid to ask questions! And that brings me to the second part: trust your gut. There will be a school (or several schools) where you just feel more comfortable. You may not always be able to articulate why (Was it how comfortable the residence halls felt? Was it the good food in the D-hall? Was it a professor or a coach whose passion was contagious?). But whatever it is, you just know a place feels more right to you. If Grinnell is that place for you, I hope to see much more of you in the near future!
Advice about applying to schools: Make sure you stay on top of the deadlines and never be afraid to reach out to the Office of Admission if you have questions or want to set up a campus visit.
