Rev. Cassandra Lawrence

Associate Chaplian

Reverend (Rev.) Cassandra Lawrence is the Associate Chaplain at Grinnell College’s Center for Religion, Spirituality, and Social Justice. She is a commissioned Deacon in the United Methodist Church and a BJC Religious Liberty Fellow, focusing on working alongside communities and individuals to deepen spirituality, justice, interfaith engagement, and beloved community. She recently served as the Director of Strategic Communications with the Shoulder to Shoulder Campaign: Standing with American Muslims, Advancing American Ideals. A national multifaith coalition addressing anti-Muslim discrimination through engaging faith communities. She teaches negotiation and conflict resilience as a mediator, community trust builder, and interfaith and racial justice community organizer. She worked with the diplomatic community to identify and address training gaps to improve engagement with religious and community peacebuilders. She served with AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) as a team leader in Louisiana on hurricane recovery efforts. She worked as a Family and Young Adult Ministries Director in Santa Rosa, California. Originally from California, she lived in Washington, D.C. for 12 years before moving to Grinnell. 

Education and Degrees

B.A. in Religious Studies from the University of British Columbia.

Master’s degree in Comparative Ethnic Conflict from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. 

Master's of divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary (Washington, D.C.) with honors, receiving the Excellence in Public Theology Award.
