Jiyoung Shin

Doctoral Trainee

Offices, Departments, or Centers: Student Health and Wellness ,

Jiyoung Shin (she/her) joins Grinnell as a practicum trainee and is currently a doctoral student in counseling psychology at the University of Iowa. Originally from Korea, she worked as a professional counselor in university settings in Korea for five years before beginning her doctoral studies in the United States. Passionate about working with college students, Jiyoung is dedicated to helping clients develop psychological flexibility to address their concerns and tap into their own resources and strengths.

She strives to be an enthusiastic collaborator, tailoring cognitive-behavioral approaches (such as ACT, DBT, and CBT) and emotional-experiential techniques through a positive psychology lens based on clients’ needs and concerns. As an advocate for social justice, she is always attentive to the systems and contexts that affect clients. In her personal life, she has a deep love for all forms of art, especially performing arts and cinema, and enjoys having meaningful conversations with friends and family. Jiyoung is excited to be part of the Grinnell College community!
