What you love about your territory: I’m a native of the Midwest and enjoy getting to discover more of the region I’ve never been to before. I also did an internship with the Senate a few years ago and I like to get back to the DC area with my travels to Maryland.
What you love about Grinnell: Grinnell is always pulling nationally and globally respected scholars and speakers to campus. I’ve heard Ta-Nehisi Coates take about the case for reparations. I watched environmentalist Bill McKibben, speak at commencement a few years ago. I was interviewed for an article in The Guardian when Bernie Sanders packed Darby Gym. I love the exposure to new ideas and perspectives I couldn’t get anywhere else.
Hobbies/activities: I enjoy working in the kitchen and I’m always finding new project recipes. Anything that takes a whole day or more to make (sourdough breads or smoked meats) always tastes better. I also enjoy spending time outside. Very few days are wasted when you spend them golfing or fishing.
Advice about searching for schools: Do your best to understand what you want to get out of your college experience. It’s ok if your priorities are broad or continue to change. Having some idea of what you want helps to narrow your search.
Advice about applying for schools: Show your enthusiasm. Ask questions, tour campus in-person or virtually, sign up for an interview. We read through many applications each year and showing your enthusiasm for a school can help make you stand out from the rest of the pool.
