Love science? Curious about biological chemistry? Diving in head-first might seem intimidating. But Grinnell College’s hands-on, discovery-based learning approach in its Introduction to Biological Chemistry (BCM 262) course will spark your excitement and enthusiasm for the subject. This innovative, fast-paced course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to succeed as you further your studies in the field.

This interdisciplinary course features information and tools to help you understand the chemical workings of biological molecules. In the tradition of Grinnell, the class size is kept small, which means faculty members have time to provide each student with individual attention and participate in rigorous discussions. In the labs, you will use tools and methods to help you perform new, sophisticated analyses of biological molecules. With its combination of lectures and labs, you’ll find this course offers essential knowledge that you can take with you on your career development path.

Introduction to Biological Chemistry features 7–8 weeks of labs that will teach you to isolate, purify, and study an enzyme. The methods you learn in these labs can be applied to any enzyme — an invaluable skill.

When you take Introduction to Biological Chemistry, you will be well prepared for further studies in the field. Many students who take the course plan to declare a BCM major, and many also move on to do summer research, prepare for the MCAT, and eventually pursue graduate studies or medical school.

This course is fast-paced and intense, but if you have a passion for science, you’ll find that it not only sparks your interest in the field, but it will also fuel the fire of your curiosity for learning.
