Shuchi Kapila, professor of English, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant, which she’ll use to travel to India to complete the research for and writing of her second book. Her book will explore the Indian Partition of 1947 through the memories of survivors, the "postmemory" of the children and grandchildren of survivors, and formal memorialization efforts. They include an oral history archive at the University of California, Berkeley, and a newly built museum of the partition in Amritsar, Punjab, India.

The Fulbright grant will allow Kapila to travel to India to revisit the museum, conduct interviews with the descendants of partition survivors, and collaborate with colleagues in India, particularly scholars at the Centre for the Studies in Violence, Memory and Trauma at the University of Delhi, which will be her host during her stays. Kapila earned her bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees at Delhi.

This Fulbright award is a “flex grant” that will allow her to make several trips over a two-year period to accomplish these goals.
