Shoppers Support Grinnell High School Library by Shopping Locally

Feb 5, 2014

This 2013 holiday season, shoppers can help the Grinnell High School library by shopping locally.

During December, the Pioneer Bookshop will donate 10% of all sales to the Grinnell High School library.

Cassie Wherry, manager of the College Bookstore and Pioneer Bookshop, said the effort recognizes Grinnell College’s commitment to education and the community. “We hope to support the love of reading at an early age to encourage a lifetime of reading enjoyment,” she noted.

“This generous support from Grinnell College means a great deal,” said GHS librarian Chelsey Kolpin. With funds from last year’s December bookstore promotion, the GHS library was able to purchase popular new books and new signs for the library. Kolpin says that income from this year’s promotion will likely be used to expand specific areas of the collection, and to support continued research into e-books and other technological resources, like databases.

In 2009, Grinnell College and Grinnell High School became Partners in Education, joining other schools and businesses community-wide to support educational opportunities in Grinnell. The goal of the partnership is to enhance educational opportunities at Grinnell High School and Grinnell College.

“This partnership has been valuable to both Grinnell College and Grinnell High School,” said Monica Chavez-Silva, director of community enhancement and engagement at Grinnell College. “It’s helped build connections between the two educational institutions, and provided opportunities to collaborate in new ways to strengthen educational resources in the community.”

Located in downtown Grinnell at 823 4th Ave., the Pioneer Bookshop features current popular books, books with Iowa connections, children’s books and educational toys, and Pioneer and Tiger apparel, and more.

The Pioneer Bookshop is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Starting Monday, Dec. 9, the bookshop will open for its extended holiday hours, which are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
