Remembering Nelson Mandela

Dec 11, 2013
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
― Nelson Mandela

Grinnell gathers at noon Thursday, Dec. 12 in Herrick Chapel to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life and mourn his passing.

“Nelson Mandela’s greatest gift to South Africa was reconciliation,” says George Drake ’56, professor emeritus of history and former Grinnell President.Apartheid brutally oppressed people of color, but Mandela convinced a nation to forget the past and live for the future, thus freeing both black and white to move forward as one nation.”

“Remembering Nelson Mandela” will include speakers Drake, Associate Professor Elizabeth Prevost, and Larry Boateng Asante ’17, a student from Ghana.
