Mayflower Community Eyes Expansion
Housing availability for seniors may be improving thanks to a proposed expansion of Mayflower Community.
Grinnell College is part of a group that assembled land near the Old Glove Factory for possible expansion of Mayflower Community, a senior living center. The new development is called Watertower Square.
Mayflower hopes to build 26 well-appointed apartments to be sold to buyers age 55 or older, if Mayflower can sell enough units before construction. Nearly half have been reserved.
The project cleared a key city block for development, making way for more senior units. The site is south of the Old Glove Factory and west of Mayflower’s current buildings, reports Monica Chavez-Silva, the College’s director of community enhancement and engagement.
The city of Grinnell’s redevelopment goals call for new housing options, says Russ Behrens, Grinnell city manager. The complex offers parking and a range of services, including meals, housekeeping, and nurse response.
The Mayflower plans to accept reservations through June 1, with construction beginning later this year. Units should be available by spring 2015.
The location is close to downtown, Central Park, churches, and Grinnell College. Mayflower is home to a number of retired Grinnell faculty and staff members.
