Wilson Okello, a poet, storyteller, and advocate of social justice who teaches at Miami University in Ohio, will give the Scholars’ Convocation at Grinnell College on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The lecture, titled “Living in the Wake of Crisis,” is free and open to the public. It will begin at 11 a.m. in Joe Rosenfield ’25 Center, Room 101, 1115 Eighth Ave., Grinnell.

Twice featured on TEDx, Okello employs and promotes creative expression as a means to generate critical self-reflection, inspire confidence, and live a more intentional life. He strives to assist others in identifying, cultivating and living out their dreams.

He is a doctoral fellow at Miami University, where he teaches a variety of courses, including Elements of Social Justice, Spirituality and Leadership in Education, and Black Radical Thought and Praxis. His research interests focus on development theory, creative and critical teaching methods, black feminist thought in education, and the African diaspora.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University and a master’s degree in human development and family studies-college student personnel from the University of Rhode Island. He founded the Truth to Power Project, which weaves together hip hop, spoken-word poetry, and black feminist thought to generate critical self-reflection, promote intentional living, and inspire determination in educators, students, and communities.
