The Ladies Education Society Awards Scholarships at Fall Tea Event

The 160-year-old Ladies Education Society awards scholarships, continuing a tradition established during the Civil War

The Ladies Education Society (LES) held an annual Fall Tea on Thursday, November 10 at the President’s House to honor Grinnell College seniors with scholarships for 2022. Founded in 1862 during the Civil War at Grinnell College (then Iowa College), the society annually awards scholarships to students who identify as women based on academic excellence, service, leadership and financial need. 

The 2022 scholarship recipients are

  • Sophia Bernabe ’23, psychology 
  • Aubrie Torhorst ’23, biology and studio art 
  • Eliza Meyer ’23, sociology  
  • Cosette Rhoads ’23, biology  
  • Olivia Carr ’23, biology  

The 2022-2023 LES officers include

  • Michael Mackenzie, President

  • Harriet Adelberg, Vice President   
  • Leslie Lyons, Secretary   
  • Lynn Cavanagh, Treasurer   
  • Sue Drake, Historian and Archivist

Professor Michael Mackenzie, spouse of Grinnell College President Anne F. Harris, fulfills the tradition of inviting the college president’s spouse to serve as president of LES. The Ladies Education Society is especially grateful for his enthusiastic support in hosting this special event.
