Join the Chorus
Monday, January 26, 2015, 7pm, Sebring Lewis Hall at Grinnell College's Bucksbaum Center for the Arts
The Oratorio Society is open to all – students, faculty, staff, townspersons - to get together on Mondays and have a good time singing tuneful, spirited music. Music should not be a spectator sport! Here is a valuable opportunity to get involved. We’ve got an exciting array of music to continue the 2014-15 year. Looking ahead for spring, we’ll be performing Mozart’s Requiem with the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra. Please take a minute to sign up here.
In the fall, we joined forces with a professional orchestra to perform two celebrated works: Vivaldi’s Gloria and the Adam’s Lament, by Arvo Pärt. These two contrasting halves of the program as a sort of intuitive response to the huge contrasts in the world that we live in today: Here we are in beautiful, peaceful, prosperous Iowa, but there is so much travail in so many parts of the world. Vivaldi offers some of the most uplifting, joyous music that’s ever been written. The Arvo Pärt work is richly lyrical and expressive—and also very satisfying to sing in a different way. It’s a spiritually intense work, and the text seems suffused with the brokenness that we see in so many parts of the world today. The premiere recording of this outstanding work won a Grammy award in 2013.
