Grinnell Responds: Haitian Relief
Grinnell College joins the worldwide community in extending our sympathies and support for the people of Haiti and stand in solidarity as students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members. As Grinnellians, our core value for social responsibility translates into action as we plan for, coordinate, and raise awareness of the crisis, the Haitian people, and the significance of Haiti’s historic place in a diverse and global context. We appreciate the interest and commitment of so many Grinnellians who have already come forward to participate in a Grinnell community response. If you have not contributed to the relief effort or would like to offer more assistance, we encourage you to make a donation to Partners in Health or to the relief organization of your choice. Grinnell campus and community events:
- Doug Cutchins Rendition of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie - "We Are the World"
- Des Moines Gay Men’s Choir Sunday, April 18 - 4:00 PM, United Church of Christ/4th Ave. & Broad Free Concert: Donations will be accepted at the door for Kids Against Hunger – Haiti
The total raised by the Grinnell Community for Haitian Relief is $5568.68 these donations have been split evenly between Partners in Health and Stop Hunger Now. As we continue to reflect individually and as a community on ways we can contribute to the relief and long-term sustainability efforts for Haiti, our thoughts continue to be with the citizens of Port-au-Prince, their families, and the relief workers. Several student groups are already collaborating and working with the Center for Religion, Spirituality, and Social Justice to coordinate assistance response as they return to campus and in the weeks and months to come. We are also interested in hearing from alumni and Grinnellians who are off campus about how they are helping the Haiti relief effort. The CRSSJ will be coordinating events in the coming weeks, and will keep the community apprised of ways they can continue to be involved in immediate and long-term efforts through education and action. Thank you for your continued concern for the people of Haiti. Russell K. Osgood, president Deanna Shorb, chaplain justice@grinnell.edu
