The Grinnell College Museum of Art is expanding its hours to give visitors more access to the Museum and its exhibitions. As of July 6, the Museum will be open to the public during the following times:

  • Tuesday through Friday 11 am – 6 pm
  • Thursday 11 am – 8 pm
  • Saturday & Sunday 1 – 5 pm

According to Director Susan Baley, “Grinnell College Museum of Art was had to cut back its hours following the 2020 pandemic closure due to the lack of personnel. We are thrilled to announce we have hired an additional Museum Guard, Hamza Farah, who will be on duty Thursday evenings and weekends. Museum Guard Jodi Brandenburg will continue to be a friendly face at the front desk Tuesday through Friday. The Museum team is committed to providing additional hours outside the traditional workday, so more members of the community can visit our exhibitions.”

This summer, GCMoA presents the exhibition Sustaining Vision: Recent Acquisitions to the Grinnell College Museum of Art Collection, through August 27. Sustaining Vision features work added to the Museum’s collection since 2021, including gifts to the College and purchases made through endowed funds.

The work on display is diverse in many ways, and covers a wide range of time periods, artist nationalities, and artist ethnicities. The oldest work in the exhibition is a Chinese Martaban storage jar made by an unknown artist during the 9th to 10th centuries. This ceramic work is part of a 2022 gift of seven ceramic Martaban storage jars from Burma, China, and Thailand by Ignatius Widiapradja, professor emeritus of Drake University. The most recent work in the exhibition is a screenprint by Canadian artist Tau Lewis titled See the True Work of Angels, which was created earlier this year. The work was purchased for the collection with the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund.

Roughly half of the 47 artists included in Sustaining Vision are American. However, the exhibition also includes artists from Brazil, Burma, Canada, China, Germany, India, Iraq, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Seventeen of the featured artists identify as BIPOC, an acronym for Black, indigenous, people of color).

In celebration of its new hours, GCMoA will give $5 in Grinnell Bucks to the first 100 visitors during the expanded hours (Thursday, 6 to 8 pm and Sunday, 1 to 5 pm) beginning on Thursday, July 6. Grinnell Bucks can be redeemed at more than 200 businesses in the area. They are accepted by every member of the Grinnell Area Chamber of Commerce. Limit one $5 Grinnell Bucks per person. Groups of two or more people are limited to two $5 Grinnell Bucks for the entire group. The Museum encourages you to experience our new hours and support local businesses.
