Edouard Duval-Carrié’s ‘Visualizing Freedom and Abolition’

In fall 2017, Assistant Professor of Art History Fredo Rivera ’06 conducted an Exhibition Seminar which resulted in the student-curated exhibition and accompanying catalogue, En Voyage: Hybridity and Vodou in Haitian Art. Edouard Duval-Carrié was one of the artists included in that exhibition. He visited campus to work directly with the seminar students on both the exhibition, which took place here in the Museum in spring 2018, and on a site-specific art installation for Grinnell College’s Humanities and Social Studies Complex. The mixed-media installation consists of 35 resin panels, similar to those displayed here, which explore ideas and images of "freedom and abolition" from the Caribbean to the Midwestern frontier. Students collected their own images and objects to sandwich between the six layers of resin, creating a unique narrative for each block.
