April 11 Ryan Solomon Research in Progress Talk
What: The Legal Violence of Immigration Controls
When: 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023
Where: Burling First Floor Lounge
Please join the Grinnell College Libraries at 4 p.m., Apr. 11, as we continue our Faculty/Staff Research Series with Ryan Solomon, associate director of service and social innovation, Center for Careers, Life, and Service, for his research-in-progress talk entitled “The Legal Violence of Immigration Controls.” Solomon will share his fieldwork conducted in South Africa on the response of civil society groups to ongoing xenophobic violence in South Africa. Solomon draws a connection between explicit violence against African migrants and the subtle, but pervasive agentless violence of immigration controls. Solomon will highlight important parallels between the sanctioned violence of immigration controls in the U.S. and Europe and the exclusion of many migrants from access to basic rights.
Ryan Solomon facilitates community engagement opportunities for students at Grinnell College, both through funded programs, like Service-Learning Work Study, and volunteer opportunities. Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Ryan completed his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin, after which he taught at Colgate University and the University of Chicago. Ryan specializes in community dialogue work, but he has run a range of community engagement programs, from migrant rights programs to anti-racism projects. Ryan is a keen believer in the role of community engagement in building democratic skills and attitudes.
Refreshments will be provided.
