Brian Jaworski

Brian Jaworski recently completed his 20th season at the helm of Grinnell men’s soccer after being named the 8th head coach in program history in May of 2004.

Jaworski had a breakthrough campaign in his 5th season at Grinnell as the Pioneers won the 2009 Midwest Conference Tournament title and earned the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance as Jaworski was voted MWC Coach of the Year.  He also earned league Coach of the Year honors in 2016.

Jaworski has helped build the Pioneer program into a consistent winner.  After his first two teams went 10-19-2 and 5-13 in Midwest Conference play, Grinnell has posted a 161-144-32 overall record and a 96-61-15 conference record.  In his 20 seasons coaching the Grinnell team (including the cancelled 2020 season), his teams have qualified for the MWC post-season tournament 11 times and have advanced to the championship match in six of their appearances.

Jaworski’s 2014 team was one for the history books.  Grinnell emerged as the NCAA leader in three categories.  Isaiah Tyree ‘15 led the nation in goals against average at 0.218 and save percentage at .959, while the Pioneers were also tops in team save percentage with a mark of .916.  During the same season, Grinnell tied or set five MWC records, including Tyree in goals against average and save percentage.  The Pioneers established new league marks in goals allowed with eight and team goals against average at .44, with the latter mark ranking fourth nationally.  Grinnell tied the MWC record for shutouts in a season with 11. 

Coach Jaworski has guided 28 players to 1st Team All-Conference and 31 players to 2nd Team All-Conference honors.  He has seen 13 of his players be named United Soccer Coaches All-Region and 12 players earn United Soccer Coach Scholar All-Region team.  In 2021, Jasper Yang ‘21 became the first Grinnell men’s soccer player to be named United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America.

Mark Rosenberg ’11 became the first Grinnell men’s soccer player to be named MWC Player of the Year in 2010.  In addition, Rosenberg was named to the Jewish Sports Review All-America First Team for NCAA Division II and III.

In 2021, Jaworski’s team featured Jasper Yang ‘23, who was named MWC Offensive Player of the Year.  A three-time first-team All -Conference selection, Yang tied for the nation’s leading goal scorer with 24 that season.  In addition, he earned three All-Region selections and went on to earn the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.

The 2022 season saw Noah Guyton ‘23 earn Midwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year.  Guyton and Yang became the first Grinnell soccer players to earn back-to-back Offensive Player of the Year awards.  The duo were back-to-back Scholar All-Region selections as well.
Brian Jaworski also served Grinnell College as Head Men’s Golf Coach for 17 years.  Among his golf team accomplishments are being crowned 2011 DIII Academic National Champions by Golf Coaches Association of America.  In 2022, his golf team earned the prestigious Mark Laesch Award.  This award is presented to the golf team that showed the most improvement in stroke average from the previous season.  Jaworski was named Midwest Conference Golf Coach of the Year in 2013. During Jaworski’s tenure, Pete Kieselbach ’10, Peter Marsho ’12, and Evan Bunis ’18 earned multiple All-America Scholar awards from the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Jaworski arrived at Grinnell in July of 2004, following a long and successful career as an assistant coach at DePauw University that spanned from 1991-2003.  During his tenure as an assistant coach, the Tigers went 167-58-12 (.704) and made four NCAA Tournament appearances.
In May 2003, Jaworski was named Aflac National Assistant Coach of the Year in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the DePauw University men’s soccer program.  The award is based on a coach’s longevity and expertise, as well as contributions to the school and community, and special achievements throughout their careers.

In addition to his work with the men’s soccer program at DePauw, he also was an assistant coach for the DePauw women’s soccer team that advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 2003.

The Flossmoor, IL native played collegiate soccer at DePauw University (1984-1988).  He became the first player in the school’s history to earn All-America honors in men’s soccer, earning the distinction in 1988.  He played in 67 out of 68 games for the Tigers, scoring 31 goals and totaling 13 assists for a total of 75 points, which still ranks in the top ten for career points.  His time in Greencastle resulted in an overall record of 52-13-3.
Jaworski earned both a National Diploma and Advanced National Diploma from United Soccer Coaches.

He resides in Grinnell with his wife, Leslie, who is the Director of Community Life for the Mayflower community in Grinnell.  They have three children:

Ann Marie (’19, Boston University), a former three-year captain for the Terrier women’s soccer team.  She is a former member the USA U19 Women’s National Team.  She is currently the head soccer coach at Simmons University (NCAA III).

John (’24, Sacred Heart University), is a member of the Pioneers Division I ice hockey team.  He is an Alternate Captain with the squad.  Prior to attending SHU, John played for the Chicago Steel in the USHL, winning the Anderson Cup in 2019.

Calvin (’26, Northern Iowa), is a member of the Division I Panther football program where he is a defensive back.  He attended Grinnell High School where he was a five-sport athlete…2022 Iowa Shrine Bowl participant…2021 First Team All-State soccer...All-Conference basketball player…placed sixth in doubles at the IHSAA state tennis tournament in 2021…Served as Grinnell High School Ambassador and a mentor in violence prevention.
